Senator Randolp~'s talk, one of two he made at Harpers Ferry F~id,ay a~fternoo,n, was mainly dir- ected to the historians, some of them among the nation's tops in ~s field, and to those who knew and loved the late Dr. Henry T. ~fcDonald, for 45 years president 01". Storer College and the man ~andolph credited with being the origi.n~tor of the idea for the Har- peys Ferry National Monument. .l%andolph told of coming to Har pets Ferry immediately following She disastrous floods of 1936 to meet and talk with Dr. McDonald and Lewi~ D. Nichols about what Could and should be done to help me town out of the dilemma ~.ch had been brought on by ehe floods. Senator Randolph was in- t~j~-ttced to the group by Mrs. Cy Cavalier, Cen~ten.~ial chair- ~torney Lee Bu~hong of Char- lOS Town, chairman of the pro- gram for Historian's Day at the observance, presided ~t the din- ner program which also featured t~e reading of a paper by J. E. B. ~tuart, III, grandson of the fam- ed CorffedeP~te General of the same name. Stuart as a U. S. Army l~eutenant, had served as second in command to Colonel l~.~aert E. Lee in the capture of :Brown and his cohorts. The grandson, a re.~ident of ~1~'anhasset, N. Y, brought out that General Stuart is recognized as one of the greatest ca~al,ry leaders of all time eve.n thoug~ he was killed ~t the early age of 31. Eur- opeans were the firs.t to recognize ~e greatness of Stuart ws a cav- vAryman who "brought that arm Of the service to perfection never @t~,~lned before or since." The grandson a&~o defended Stu art for his actions a,t Gettysburg, point often criticiz~ed by saying t~h~t Stuart was merely carrying out Oe,neral Lee's orders as Lee, himself, later made clear.
