Sixteen peddle from different areas of West Virginia attended. Utah Senator Jake Garn was the featured speaker at the September 12 conference. Though the Equal Rights Amendment was sent to the states for ratification in 1972, ERA advocates have not been able to win approval of 38 states, the number required to make an amendment part of the Con- stitution. The deadline will expire next March. Because of this, ERA ac- tivities are lobbying hard in Washington to extend the deadline for at least another 39 'months. According to opinion polls, a large majority of the American public opposes the extension, viewing it as an effort to rig the rules in favor of ERAs, Sup- )orters. (The propose ex- tension would only allow states to change their votes from "no" permit states to change their minds the other way. As some of the leaders of the Stop ERA Extension group, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Conklyn expect to play a leadership role in the national campaign to convince Congress it would be wrong and unfair to pass such a "one- sided" extension. The House of Representatives, under intense pressure from the White House, the Congressional leadership, and various feminist lobbying groups, already has passed the proposal. The proposal is facing a threatened filibuster in the Senate. Senator Garn, who has promised to lead the Senate fight, has said it is not the in- tention of filibuster supporters to prevent the extension proposal from coming up for a vote. Rather, he has said, it is their intention to insure that any proposal coming up for a vote is approved in a constitutional manner and i iir. "Exuberance is beauty."
