In this country it first appeared in editions of The New England Primer about the time of the Revolutionary War. But the earliest record of the prayer is found in a devotional hand- book dated 1160 A D. If the third line strikes you as mor- bid, remember how high the mortal- ity rate among children was just four generations ago. Some modern parents have taught their youngsters an additional cou- plet: "If I should live for other days I pray the Lord to guide my ways." That's a worthy addition--if we do our part! I Lay Me Down To Support the Church. Share with your children its worship and teaching. Honor God in your home.
