I 6 SPIRIT OF JEFFERSON Farmer's ADVOCATE -- THURSDAY, MAY 19, 1988
BLUE RIDGE A CRES
Faith B. Cone
Dial 725-5488
Hello again. It's the middle of the
night or early morning and I am at the
table with a blank sheet of paper and
a mind to match. Seems that all I can
think of is spring and how [mautiful the
weather is and how things are grow-
ing. The dogwoods, redbud, jonquils
and tulips have gone with the wind;
the lillies of the valley last only a few
days anyway; but the early peonies
and iris are starting their period of
glory. The leaves are almost all out;
the river is high; and our Paulonia
trees by the Shenandoah River are
lavender masterpieces. What a
marvelous time of year! Friday the
13th, our only one in 1988, slipped by
without any notice - I didn't have any
luck that day, good or bad.
As I crawled out of bed at 3 a.m.,
Russ woke up. I had disturbed his
dream -- he had been dreaming that
he had just been made Chief of Staff
of the U.S. Air Force! He was so ex-
cited until I awoke him. Guess Russ's
+mind was busy with the past after
yesterday's phone call. A Cyril
Cogswell called him from North
Carolina. Cyril and Russ went to St.
Albans-on-the Mount in Washington,
D.C., in the very early 20's and Cyril
wanted to know if Russ was planning
to attend the class reunion in June.
Guess that would be the 65th. Cyril bad
been reading his St. Alban's bulletin -
but ours has not arrived. Washington,
D.C., is so far away - Maybe the
bulletin is with the two Mother's Day
cards that Pat Hardy mailed me more
than a week ago which should have ar-
rived before Mother's Day. Pat said
she personally marled them and the
address was the one she always uses
- makes one wonder.
Well, let's get along and do coming
events early before I forget them and
you-all get tired of reading_Major
repairs continue on our 30-year-old
swimming pool. John Kincaid is
hopeful that the pool will be ready for
opening Memorial Day weekend.
We're all crossing our fingers.
First event on the calendar for the
season is a softball game: Oldsters vs.
Youngsters. Play will start riext Sun-
day, May 22, at 4 p.m. in the club's
field located below the tennis courts.
Competition is keen as one side tries
to prove that older is better. Cal
LaMotte is planning to take his grill so
that hot dogs can be cooked and sold
as well as soft drinks. Come and enjoy
fun and games and start the new
season off with a bang. Speaking of
bangs - I heard quite a few of them
over the weekend. Isn't it sorta early
for fireworks?
Also coming up on the club agenda
is the annual open house sponsored by
the Blue Ridge Mountain Country
Club. Planning is underway for the
event which is the only function spon-
sored by BRMCC that is open to all
BRAcres property owners. However,
the club requests that no guests be

brought. Blue Ridge Acres, Inc., as
always is furnishing dollars to cover
the cost of liquid refreshments as well
as a beautiful floral centerpiece for the
head table. Usually the centerpiece
becomes a door prize for some lucky
individual. The open house date is Sun-
day, May 29, 3 to 5 p.m. Club members
are furnishing goodies to help fill the
hallow legs - Let Faithfully know what
you will bring. Help will be needed to
set up Saturday as well as Sunday.
I made a lotta little notes of things
I wanted to put in the column, but they
seem especially disjointed this week.
One note says that we tried the new
marinated catfish which was on sale
at a local store last week and found it
delicious. (The fish, that is, not the
store.) Just toss the filet into a 225
degree fry pan that has been sprayed
with Pam or the like and cook it a few
minutes or so on each side. On the
same line which says marinated cat-
fish, another note reads "Carol - Len-
ingrad." Russ's daughter called from
Paris to say that she and her other
half, Tom Rose, were leaving for a
week's stay in Russia. That seemed to
put all three of his daughters out of the
country at once: Claire is in Kenya,
Africa, and Linda on a business trip to
Finland. Just what this had to do with
marinated catfish, I don't know. But
if anyone had told me years ago how
small this old world would become, I'd
have been very surprised - am surpris-
ed now.
Bertha DeVese and Gladys Goech
took Anna Phillips, X-BRA resident
now of Harpers Ferry, to lunch at the
Charles Washington Inn. Occasion was
Anna's birthday and an opportunity to
keep up going back
many years Russ and I mov-
ed to BRAcres in 1972.
Miss seeing the Mountain Trails
Store open en Route 3 in Silver Grove.
It was a nice-looking place and seem-
ed to be filling a need, Maybe someone
will be interested in re-opening it.
Early trash appears on county roads
around Jefferson County. Really sad.
Of course we have a bit of trash in
BRAcres and I can't see much change
as a result of Larry Gaffney's strong
article in the newsletter about the
trash around certain" houses in
BRAcres. Certainly my nearby
eyesores haven't improved any.
Russ and I took a ride around the
south end of Blue Ridge Acres Sunday
p.m. He really enjoyed getting out in-
to that beautiful weather. The river-
side picnic area looked great and a
number of people were enjoying the
great out-of-doors. Met a young couple
with children who are the purchasers
of the Smithson house - didn't get their
name. They had a small bundle of
black and white fluff which turned out
to be a huskie puppy. Cute as he could
be. Baby animals are always so cute
- if they would just stay babies.
Russ and I inspected Kaye and Far-
ren McGraw's new flower beds - saw
results of the green thumb of Kaye's
mother, Violet Jenkins. As we left
Kaye's area, she returned home with
youngsters Erica and Brenton and we
chatted a bit...We also drove by Len
Erickson's house, but no one home.
Drove by Whispering Stream on
Sycamore and then on to the area
below the clubhouse and looked at Joe
and Betts Kitchen's Glendale

Aphrodite Rhododendron (really
azaleas)...beautiful. Wayne and Cyn-
dy have a few of the azalea's also and
their newly completed deck is a thing
of beauty. Was surprised to see how
close Talma and Irene Smith's house
was to the old section now that the
Smiths have started to clear their new-
ly acquired lots across the street.
Would have liked to say hello to
Georgia and Tom Patrick but catching
them at home takes some doing and
we didn't make it. Bernice Diehl, John
Kincaid's mother, was ill on Sunday
but her spouse Bob was over at Shelia
and John's house helping prepare for
Shelia's Tupperware party Tuesday.
Saw the spot where Marilyn and Jim
Pinson had their perk test and where
they plan to excavate for their new
home.
Good news and bad news at St.
John's Episcopal Church in Harpers
Ferry. Bad news was that Vicar
Marilla Whitney was ill - good news
that the Rev. John Grim agreed to hold
the 10 a.m. service on practically no
notice at all. Wife Betty played the
organ. More good news was the im-
proved health of Joe Spielman who
looked like a new man. Joe is on some
new wonder drug which, so far, has
had no side effects and has worked
wonders. Wife Millie was on call at the
hospital but I am sure that she is as ex-
icted as the rest of us...Next Sunday
