EDWARD LEWIS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT Ian Robert McIlroy, of Charles Town, senior at Episcopal High School, has been named a J. Ed- ward Lewis Scholarship recipient - an honor bestowed by Washington and Lee University as a part of the George Washington Honor Schol- arship Program to the most quali- fied incoming West Virginia resi- dent. McIlroy's scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, room and board and is renewable for four years of undergraduate work. The George Washington Honor Scholarship Program awards are based on aca- demic and personal merit and are designed to bring young people who show exceptional promise for leadership and service to the uni- versity to the campus of Washing- ton and Lee. McIlroy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John E. McI]roy. At Episco- pal, he serves as a Monitor, one of the highest student leadership po- sitions. He was recently named a Commended Student in the year 2000 National Meritsu Scholar- ~hip Program. Last academic year, e was awarded the School Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Social Studies; the Meade Book Prize for eminent excellence in five credits for the year, including two LOCAL WOMAN NAMED SCANNER FOR PROGRAM Jefferson County resident Joyce Fisher has been selected by the National Association of State Di- rectors of Education to be a scan- per for the Jefferson County area. A scanner's role is to report on the effective implementation of the In- dividuals with Disabilities Educa- tion Act (IDEA '97). Scanning is a feedback loop, which enables ~earning around IDEA implemen- rations between parents, teachers, administrators, other educational professionals and policy-makers.
