With an estimated 100 partici- pants, the Rotary Club of Charles Town's first 5K Fun Run/Walk was deemed a success, organiz- ers say. 'q~he event has exceed- ed our expectations", said Chris Cope, 5K Committee Chair, "we were very pleased with the turn out and the amount of money we were able to raise to support lo- cal charities". Organizers esti- mate they have raised $10,000, though a full tally will be an- nounced once all pledges have been collected. The Ranson Police Depart- ment formed a team that spent The Rotary Club of Charles Town had quite a few runners in its 5K Run/Walk last weekend, including some runners bedecked in white shirt and tie. 6 weeks trying to lose weight and get in shape, while at the same time raising money for a good cause. The depart- ment's total weight loss of 148.5 pounds was announced on race day. Money raised by the offi- cers will go to help the Rotary Club of Charles Town support several local charities. First place win- ners received a Gold's Gym duf- fle bag, a fleece pullover shirt, a Gold's Gym watch, a three month membership, one-month tanning, a nutrition bar, and free smoothie. The Rotary Club Town meets every 12:15 at Jefferson Hospital. Smith Memorial Golf Tournament will be on Friday, May 27, 2005, held simultaneously at both Locust Hill Golf Course and Sleepy Hollow Golf & Country Club in Jefferson County, West Virginia with a shotgun start at lpm. J.B. Smith was the son of Charles Town Rotarian Ann Smith and her husband Danny Smith, owners and operators of the Anvil Restaurant. "The tournament and recep- tion are held each year on the Friday of Memorial Day week- end with the proceeds going to a charity that best exemplifies the charitable and humanitar- ian work J. B. Smith accom- plished during his lifetime", said Leslie Smith of the Rota- ry Club of Charles Town. J.B. was killed in an automobile ac- cident August 15, 1998, at the age of 23. "One of J. B.'s most recognizable traits was his un- selfish willingness to help any- one in need", she said. Smith said these traits, combined with his love of golf, provide the im- petus for this tournament. Golfers may enter individu- ally or put a team together. A reception will follow at 6pm at the Anvil Restaurant in Harp- ers Ferry. The cost is $90 per golfer which includes the recep- tion and non-golfer's can par- ticipate in the reception only for $25. This year the charity benefactors are The Jefferson Memorial Park, The Eastern Panhandle Free Clinic and The Eastern Panhandle Communi- ty Foundation (the Foundation will provide a sustaining fund- ing source for high school base- ball in Jefferson County, The Jefferson Memorial Park and The Eastern Panhandle Free Clinic).
