"Bob" Tabb, signed on recently as part of the Moun- tains of Hope colorectal cancer awareness initiative. Mountains of Hope, West Virginia's Comprehensive Cancer Co- alition for the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center has spearhead- ed the West Virginia Colorectal Cancer Initiative which has fo- cused its prevention efforts on West Virginia's Eastern Panhan- dle and the Potomac Highlands regions throughout March and in April. West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle and Potomac Highlands re- gions were identified by the organization as a priority due to high- er incidents and mortality rates of cancer of the colon or the rec- tum. In an open letter to constituents Delegate Tabb noted that the best way to prevent colorectal cancer is through screening tests performed by a physician. An eight-year colon cancer survivor, Tabb immediately credits the lifesaving screening tests which can detect colorectal polyps or small growths that may become cancer if not removed. Tabb noted that unlike so many other diseases, often times there are no symptoms and screening tests also can find colorectal can- cer early, when treatment can be most effective. In West Virginia, most insurance plans provide coverage for the tests. , Representatives and volunteers for Mountains of Hope have been distributing information throughout the region at health fairs, Senior Centers, and health care facilities. To learn more about colorectal cancer and its prevention, individuals are encour- aged to talk with their doctor about screening options or simply by calling 800-4-CANCER for more information.
